Tony Bennett on 60 Minutes

The legendary Tony Bennett recently announced his retirement from performing at the age of 95. Famous for his singing career, he has also had a passion for painting. In celebration of his career that has spanned eight decades, I have been doing a series of haiku inspired by Mr. Bennett's artwork (when he paints, he uses his given name, Antony Benedetto).

Last week, 60 Minutes on CBS aired a piece about Tony Bennett’s final performance at Radio City Music Hall with Lady Gaga. Mr. Bennett is now living with Alzheimer’s disease and the story of his farewell performance is beautiful and inspiring. Here is the 13-minute program segment.

Tony Bennett and Me

No, I do not know Tony Bennett, but I have enjoyed his music from time to time over the years. When I found out he was also an artist with quite a portfolio of paintings to his credit, I was inspired to use a couple of his paintings as touchstones from which to write haiku. That was back in 2015.

On my blog, I write a new haiku every Saturday. When I heard about Tony Bennett’s retirement from performing at the age of 95, I took it upon myself to expand my tribute and do a series of haiku using more of his paintings.  Listed below are the haiku I have written that were inspired by Mr. Bennett’s art:

And by the way, here are some songs by Tong Bennett that I’ve posted in the past:

Monday Music: Some Other Time (Tony Bennett & Bill Evans)

The legendary Tony Bennett recently announced his retirement from performing at the age of 95. His career has spanned eight decades. "Some Other Time" was recorded in 1975 with jazz pianist Bill Evans. It is from The Tony Bennett and Bill Evans Album in which the two musicians collaborated on nine songs to produce a rich smooth jazz sound. Bennett is known for interpreting the Great American Songbook, but this collaboration reveals a musical river that runs deeper in the singer than some fans might have realized.

"Some Other Time" was composed by Leonard Bernstein, with lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green from the 1944 musical On the Town.

Monday Music: Boulevard of Broken Dreams (Tony Bennett and Sting)

If you are familiar with Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," this is not that. This song was written in 1933 by Al Dubin and Harry Warren. It was featured in the original Moulin Rouge cinematic film in 1934. The song was covered by many artists during the Big Band era, including Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole. Tony Bennett first recorded it in 1950 for Columbia records. His later version recorded in 2006 with Sting is much richer and better interpreted. Bennett was 80 years old at the time (24 years of age when his first rendition was released).

Monday Music: Speak Low (Tony Bennett and Nora Jones)

Such class, from a rich musical era. The piano, the upright bass, the music of Billie Holiday, the words, the phrasing...Norah Jones, Tony Bennett. How can you describe it? Stop talking and just listen. "Time is so old, and love so brief,,,"

Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga

Tonight marks the second anniversary of this blog. In that first introductory blog I stated:

“Not Dark Yet…” you may remember this as the title to one of Bob Dylan’s songs on his Time out of Mind CD. I have borrowed that phrase for the title of my blog, because I like the imagery it evokes. My interests include poetry, religion, politics, nature, conservation, and striving toward the common good. This blog will cover observations of life and shared events. If the politics and religion aspect get too heated, there is always the mediating influence of poetry. Billy Collins, U.S. poet laureate from 2001 to 2003, says that every poem is about death and gratitude. The awareness of death heightens the beauty of the world as we see it. As one who attempts to write poetry, I heartily agree with that notion. Poetry conveys that sense of awareness and gratitude.

So in this space you will see political commentary, personal observations, spiritual questions, maybe a poem from time to time or some pertinent literary references. My emphasis, I anticipate, will always be on the “Not dark yet,” but in the background there is always Bob Dylan’s reminder (as any good poet will affirm) “Not dark yet, but it’s gettin’ there.”

One thing that I've also added is the occasional music video. Here's a great one for New Year's Eve. I have long been an admirer of singer Tony Bennett. He is one class act. Here is a great combination of the old and the new with duet from Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga. Thanks to Carol Marks for first posting this one.
