Celebrating National Poetry Month
Many have written about how people turned to poetry during the
COVID Pandemic. As former U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins said in a Facebook
address, “The virus is slowing us down to the speed of poetry.”
"When We Were All Together," and "In Lieu of
Flowers: Dying in the Days of COVID" are two poems I wrote during the
height of the pandemic. They are currently featured in the literary
e-zine, AvantAppal[achia] in the special issue, "The Modern Plague
Years."
When the pandemic began, my writing group spent time writing
poetry about our pandemic experiences. Our work was compiled into a book, The Social Distance: Poetry in Response to COVID-19.
Whether we are coming out of a pandemic, or on the cusp of a
new phase, may you find courage, purpose, comfort, and meaning in the words of
the poets who document humanity's struggles, hopes, darkness, and light.
